Embracing the #UNLITTER Lifestyle While Traveling

By Shannon

One of my biggest passions in life is discovering new natural environments while traveling. I love immersing myself in different places, from bustling cities to serene deserts. Amidst my adventures, I carry an #UNLITTER patch on my backpack—a symbol of my commitment to living sustainably and inspiring others to do the same.

When people inquire about my patch, I explain that #UNLITTER is more than just a movement; it's a nonprofit initiative dedicated to empowering individuals to adopt positive, sustainable lifestyles. It encompasses various aspects, from mindful consumption to environmental stewardship. #UNLITTERing extends beyond picking up trash; it's about nurturing our minds and bodies, but the heart of #UNLITTER lies in taking tangible actions to preserve our planet.

Wherever my travels take me, I make it a habit to pick up litter, no matter how inconvenient. Each piece collected serves as a catalyst for change, inspiring others to join the movement.

While traveling, I encounter diverse littering scenarios—from accidental debris to deliberate acts of negligence. Despite moments of frustration, I turn to #UNLITTER communities for support and guidance on addressing such challenges constructively. In my efforts to promote #UNLITTER, I've even customized my belongings, like my sandals, with the movement's logo. It's a simple yet impactful way to spark conversations and raise awareness wherever I go.

My journey with #UNLITTER began in 2017 when I stumbled upon a sticker on a surfboard rack. Since then, I've been actively involved, from starting high school chapters to inspiring communities in places like Houston, Texas. Ultimately, #UNLITTERing isn't just about cleaning up the planet—it's about fostering a culture of mindfulness and responsibility. With every piece of litter removed and every mind enlightened, we move closer to a cleaner, greener future for all.

I’ve found having the simple phrase #UNLITTER always around me, whether it be through a t-shirt, a patch, or a sticker, helps as a little reminder to take care of the planet. If you want to do your part and and help #UNLITTER our planet too, maybe think of ways you can remind yourself, until one day it becomes muscle memory and you don’t have to think about picking up trash at all, you just do it. A physical reminder is a great way to keep the idea in your brain. It can be as straightforward as a piece of #UNLITTER swag or it can be something you created, upcycled, or found. Surround yourself with the things that remind you to do better.
